Lynden's baseball team used a five-run first inning to help itselft earn a 12-6 win over River Ridge from Lacey on Tuesday, April 8, at Lynden.

Cameron Wainwright hit a three-run home run in the first to cap off the five-run rally. He finished the game 1 for 3 with four RBI.

"We responded well after a tough loss to Squalicum yesterday," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. "We were a little sloppy on defense, but that home run was a big highlight."

Caden Lair got the win for the Lions after being called up from the junior varsity squad. Christian Mouat was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI and Kody Ames was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Lynden's next game is at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Meridian.

Squalicum's baseball team had its fifth errorless game of the season and the Storm beat Lynden 7-2 on Monday, April 7, at Lynden. Josh Holcomb was 4 for 4 with 2 runs, an RBI and two doubles for Squalicum.

Christian Jorgenson got the win, improving his record to 2-0, and David Stealy sealed it with a save for the Storm.

Lion's first inning sets tone for 9-3 win

LYNDEN 9, BURLINGTON-EDISON 3 Lynden’s baseball team knows what it takes to win baseball games: stringing hits together. The Lions did exactly that, using two in-nings to score all nine of their runs in Lynden’s 9-3 defeat of Burlington-Edison on Wednesday, April 2, at Lynden High School.

The Lions started the game off right, scoring five runs in the first. Jordan Wittenberg got a single and stole second and third to get things headed in the right direction.

“In any sport, speed kills, but in baseball it’s obvious on the bases,” Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. “Even when they know it’s coming, it can be hard to stop.”

A two-RBI single by Dalton Ohligschlager finished off an inning in which 10 guys went to the plate.

“Preseason games and non-league guys are meant to get guys at-bats, so that was nice,” White said.

The Lions scored four runs in the fourth inning to put away the Tigers.

Christian Mouat set the tone on the mound early, retiring the side in order in the first inning before going on to pitch five innings, walking only two and giving up six hits. He allowed all three runs.

“He did a great job relying on the defense,” White said. “We turned two double plays today. We had some errors but we solidified some things in our defense today.”

Cameron Wainwright and Wittenberg each pitched an inning in which they retired the side. Wittenberg got the only strikeout of the game.

Lynden plays Squalicum on Monday, April 7, at home.

Late rally falls just short for Lynden

Lynden's baseball team staged a seventh-inning rally, but couldn't complete the comeback and fell 9-7 to Anacortes on Monday, March 31, at Anacortes.

Jordan Wittenberg got the rally going with a triple that knocked in a run, but after the Lions racked up four runs a baserunning error killed their momentum.

"We had six hits in the seventh inning and the tying run was left at second," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview.

Wittenberg finished 3 for 4 with three stolen bases to complement his triple and RBI. Kody Ames took the loss for the Lions, going five innings with two strikeouts, three walks, eight hits and just three earned runs.

"Kody pitched well enough to get the win, but we have to eliminate the errors," White said. "Jordan has been hitting the ball well. He puts pressure on the other team."

Lynden will make up a rained-out game against Burlington-Edison at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Lynden.

Lynden's baseball team fell to Inglemoor, a class 4A team, 8-4 on Saturday, March 29, at Lynden High School. Jordan Wittenberg led the Lions, going 3 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI.

"They're a solid team - as good a team as we're going to see all year," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. "We were just a key base hit here and there away from winning. I'm really excited about the way we responded."

Lucas Petersen took the loss for Lynden, but White was impressed with his six innings pitched. Petersen was also 1 for 4 hitting with an RBI. Wittenberg finished the game on the mound for the Lions.

"Jordan did good in our leadoff spot. He puts pressure on the other team," White said of Wittenberg's hitting. "We had him throw the last inning and he looked good for us, too."

Lynden plays next at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Anacortes. The Lions will make up a rained out non-conference game against Burlington-Edison on Wednesday, April 2, in Lynden.

Sehome's five runs in first inning prove crucial

Sehome's baseball team scored five runs in the first and held off a late rally by Lynden for a 7-6 win on Wednesday, March 26, at Lynden High School.

The five runs in the first came off three hits and four Lynden errors.

"That was huge," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. "The combination of hits and errors proved costly. After that we did really well."

The Lions responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first and then four combined between the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to score the tying run.

"We put a little pressure later on in the game," White said. "Both teams hit really well, but both have to work on defense."

Leif Anderson picked up the win on the mound, striking out four in 4 2/3 innings. Davis Hampton finished off the back half of the game, striking out two.

On the other side, Christian Mouat came in on relief of Cameron Wainwright. Mouat struck out three in five innings, while allowing one run.

"We are encouraged by his performance on the mound," White said. "He did a good job of holding them at bay."

Sehome faces Bellingham on Friday, March 28, on the road. Lynden plays Burlington-Edison on Friday at home.

Lynden's bats started clicking in the back half of the game, as the Lions scored all 13 of their runs in the last four innings in a 13-1 defeat of Lynden Christian on Monday, March 24, at Lynden Christian High School.

Kody Ames was the star of the day for Lynden. It only took him 64 pitches to get all 21 outs in the seven-inning game. He only faced 23 hitters and struck out eight of them.

"He's a guy that can swallow up quite a few innings," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. "He threw really well today. He only got behind two or three hitters, so he was ahead of hitters. He kept ball down and relied on the defense."

Tristan Blaske had a home run and a double in the game for Lynden.

"It was a big win for the guys," White said. "We have a lot of guys that are still raw and have been waiting their turn to get in the lineup. So it was a good win for us. The pitching and defense did a great job."

Lynden faces Sehome on Wednesday, March 26, at home. LC plays Nooksack Valley on Wednesday on the road.

FERNDALE 11, LYNDEN 5

Ferndale's baseball team got the bats going early and took advantage of Lynden's first-game jitters to defeat the Lions 11-5 on Thursday, March 20, at Ferndale.

The Golden Eagles (2-1) scored three runs in the first and three runs in the third to pull out to the six-run lead and they never looked back.

"It was Lynden's first game and we took advantage of some miscues on their end," Ferndale coach Donny Hennigs said in a phone interview. "But we're starting to come around offensively.

Leading the way at the plate and on the mound was Ferndale's Kyler Schemstad, who drove in three runs while pitching five innings. He struck out four batters and only allowed one earned run.

"I was pretty impressed for his first varsity appearance on the mound," Hennigs said. "He ran out of steam in the fifth but he battled through and pitched well."

Lynden's bright spot was Jordan Wittenberg's home run.

Ferndale face Blaine on Monday, March 24, at home. Lynden (0-1) plays Cedarcrest on Saturday, March 22, at home.
